Late Rally Falls Short at Saint Mary's, 4-3



Coach Jorgensen's team fought back from a 3-1 halftime deficit to within one goal in the second half.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The women's soccer team got two goals down the stretch but could not score the equalizer in a 4-3 loss at Saint Mary's on Tuesday. Katie Wehrli scored from 10 yards out on the right wing for Saint Mary's at 1:36 to give the Belles a quick 1-0 lead.

The Belles would add two more first-half goals with Bridget Ronayne and Samantha Smogor finding the back of the net in the 29th and 37th minute respectively. The Bulldogs found the scoresheet just four minutes before halftime as Kelley Hutchins shot the ball past Amy Mahoney off a corner kick by Jami Pugh to make it 3-1 at intermission.

Lauren Hinton gave Saint Mary's another three-goal lead at the 57:20 mark on a feed from Sarah DuBree but then the Bulldogs would buckle down defensively and spark their offense. Tara Trombley scored one minute and eight seconds later to cut the lead to 4-2 with an unassisted goal from 30 yards out over the keeper's head. Adrian then got within one goal at the 82:25 mark as Kalie Newman took a pass from Lindsay Chitwood on the left wing off a free kick and buried it past the near post. Saint Mary's held off another late charge to claim the one-goal margin of victory.

Amanda House made 10 saves for the match as the Belles outshot Adrian, 19-7, including a 14-6 advantage for shots on goal. The Bulldogs are now 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA.
