Game 1 Box Score
ADRIAN, Mich. - The offenses were held in check on Wednesday as a stiff wind blowing in from center field played a big factor in a pair of low-scoring games at the AC Softball Field against Spring Arbor University. The Bulldogs scored in the bottom of the fifth in a 1-0 game one win and Spring Arbor came back with a split winning game two 2-1 with runs in the third and fourth innings. Each team had five hits in game one as the lone extra-base hit for Adrian proved to be the winning play. Holly Lowe smacked her ninth double into left center scoring Carmen Batway with two outs after Batway drew a walk on a full count. Andrea Vangoss threw her third shutout of the season and improved to 10-7 allowing five hits in seven innings and striking out four in a 113-pitch effort. Spring Arbor had a couple of chances to tie the game as they hit four doubles in game one. The defensive moment for Adrian came in the sixth when the Cougars' Ashley Boland stole third and attempted to come home only to be thrown out at the plate by left fielder Carly Toth for the second out. The next batter, Danielle Beckett, doubled off the wall in right center and was stranded at second to end the inning after a groundout to Vangoss. Adrian was outhit, 9-4, in game two as Kelly Tomasek gave up six of those hits and one earned run in five innings. Tomasek (7-3) struck out five and walked one throwing 81 pitches. Vangoss threw the final two innings and surrendered three hits and no runs with two strikeouts. Adrian grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first as Krissy Sheets tripled down the left field line and later scored on a rundown situation as Batway was caught up between first and second allowing Sheets to come home for the first out. Chelsea Brancheau scattered four hits and struck out four improving to 7-6 in the circle for the Cougars. Lowe was 1-for-3 with a single in game two. Ashley Kalinski and Kristin Toney also collected a hit for AC. The Bulldogs are now 18-14 overall and will get back to MIAA action on Saturday at Saint Mary's for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. |
